Fourth Sunday of Lent 2015 – Numbers 21:4

Monday, March 9, 2015

We are approaching the fourth Sunday in the season of Lent.  Moses must deal with impatience among the Israelites and poisonous serpents.  Our Ephesians selection reminds us we are saved by our faith and God’s grace, and one of the most recognizable passages in the whole Bible can be found in our selection from John.  Our lectionary passages include:  Numbers 21:4-9, Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22, Ephesians 2:1-10, and John 3:14-21.

Numbers 21:4From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way.

From a little digging, I could not find a definitive location for Mt. Hor, but if you look at the Route of the Exodus you can see relatively straight trade routes compared to the traditional, circuitous route taken by the Israelites under Moses’ direction.  If you are at all like me, you can probably relate to the Israelites frustration.

Understanding God, help us to trust you more.  Thank you for having faith in us.  Amen.
