Proper 22/Ordinary 27 – Mark 15:15-16

From Mark 15:15-16 – Jesus is still talking. “Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it. And he took [the children] up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

I have heard my grandsons exclaim, “This is what I have always wanted!” numerous times. A child’s joy is not tempered by a mask that tries to hide their true self. Children are genuine, and that is what God wants us to be.

Loving God, help us remove the masks we have worked so hard to create so that we can fully live into your will for us. AMEN.

Proper 22/Ordinary 27 – Mark 10:13-14

Hard to believe there are only three months left in 2009!

While in the region east of the Jordan, also known as Perea…From Mark 10:13-14 – People were bringing the little children to [Jesus] in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.”

I was eating lunch at a restaurant on Sunday when a family passed by us. The little boy being carried by his mother looked at us with the sweetest smile and waved. In that moment, I was shown a trust in and love for life by that young boy that often escapes me.

Gracious God, help us be able to approach you with the faith, love and trust of a young child. AMEN.

Proper 22/Ordinary 27 – Psalm 8:1-2

From Psalm 8:1-2 – O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.

“…out of the mouths of babes…” This passage in which a fortification against foes is built by some of the least among us, reminds us that in God, all is possible.

God of mystery, continue to work through each of us so that we might do amazing things for your kingdom. AMEN.

Proper 22/Ordinary 27 – Psalm 26:11-12

From Psalm 26:11-12 – But as for me, I walk in my integrity; redeem me, and be gracious to me. My foot stands on level ground; in the great congregation I will bless the LORD.

When I read this scripture, I thought of helping someone stand up who has fallen. I take their forearm in my hand, then I plant my feet firmly and evenly on the ground so I won’t slip as they rise up. Similarly, God’s spirit provides a sort of level ground for us so that we can walk truthfully and honestly.

Almighty God, give us strength to meet the challenges of this day. AMEN.

Picture for Proper 22/Ordinary 27 – Genesis 2:19a

So out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air…

Ever since this picture was emailed to me, I have wanted to post it. Enjoy!
