Fifth Sunday of Easter 2016 – John 13:34-35

Thursday, April 21, 2016

John 13:34-35“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Sometimes, I think we make following God more complicated than God intended.  “Love one another.”  Jesus loved his Jewish disciples, and he loved the woman at the well.  He ate with Jewish leaders and tax collectors.  Jesus’ arms were opened wide…in his life and in his death.

Loving God, help us to love on another genuinely.  Help us to offer love abundantly.  Amen.

Fifth Sunday of Easter, John 13:34-35

John 13:34-35 – [Jesus is speaking.] “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

What a wonderful scripture with which to end our workweek! Jesus asks that we just love one another. It is that simple. It is that hard.

Prayer: Steadfast God, help us be more loving people. AMEN.

Palm Sunday & Holy Week, 2010 – John 13:3-5

Clarity for the Journey
John 13:3-5
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him.

To wash someone’s feet, both parties have to become vulnerable to one another. A servant to the end, Christ poured out his love for us. May we be willing to risk allowing his intimate touch in our lives.

Prayer: Understanding God, help me be more vulnerable to your presence in my life so that I might walk closer to you. AMEN.

Easter – John 13:4-5, 15

Today is Maundy Thursday, and there is a special lectionary selection for today I wanted us to consider. From John 13:4-5, 15 – [Jesus] got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water in a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him…”For I have set you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”

I think most of us want to do good, and we want to help each other. But as I read these few verses, I hear Jesus asking us to take service to one another to a different level…to that of a servant. To help someone is good, but to truly be a servant to another requires a different attitude.

Prayer:

Gracious God, bless our efforts this and every day as we seek to become servants to one another. AMEN.
