A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 19:7, 17

Sunday, January 19, 2014

Proverbs 19:7, 17If the poor are hated even by their kin, how much more are they shunned by their friends! When they call after them, they are not there…Whoever is kind to the poor, lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full.

I like the imagery of us as God’s hands and feet. To those around us, we provide tangible evidence of God at work in their lives.

Prayer: Loving God, bless our work that is done in your name for our brothers and sisters. Amen.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 18:24

Saturday, January 18, 2014

Proverbs 18:24Some friends play at friendship, but a true friend sticks closer than one’s nearest kin.

Everyone needs and deserves at least one confidant. While that is person is sometimes a parent or sibling, more often it is a dear friend. Pray for the confidants in your life today.

Prayer: Gracious God, we give you thanks today for all of those people in our lives who listen to us non-judgmentally, who cry with us when we cry and who keep us grounded when we are apt to stray. Amen.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 17:9

Friday, January 17, 2014

Proverbs 17:9One who forgives an affront fosters friendship, but one who dwells on disputes will alienate a friend.

As we become more engaged with those around us, there will be more opportunities for us to hurt one another’s feelings. We are reminded by today’s passage that we are to be forgiving people.

Prayer: Loving God, help us to be more loving to everyone but especially to those with whom we live, work and worship.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 16:2-3

Thursday, January 16, 2014

Proverbs 16:2-3All one’s ways may be pure in one’s own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirit. Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Listening is a recurring theme in Proverbs. We are admonished to listen to our parents, and to take into account the advice of our friends and coworkers. Of course, we are also instructed to listen to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, help us commit our lives to you every day so that our plans will be your plans. Amen.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 15:22

Proverbs 15:22Without counsel, plans go wrong, but with many advisers they succeed.

We are reminded today that the opinions of others in our lives matter, and that their opinions can often be valuable to us personally and to the task at hand. Our prayer today is for sufficient humility to hear their voices.

Prayer: Gracious God, give us ears that are open to the multitude of voices available to us. Amen.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 14:20-21

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

Proverbs 14:20-21The poor are disliked even by their neighbors, but the rich have many friends. Those who despise their neighbors are sinners, but happy are those who are kind to the poor.

Radical neighborliness – that is what God calls us to practice. Remember in Jesus’ ministry how often he reached out specifically to those who others shunned, providing a powerful and challenging example for all of us.

Prayer: Understanding God, help us open our eyes so that we can see all of our brothers and sisters. Amen.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 13:20-21

Proverbs 13:20-21Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools suffers harm. Misfortune pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous.

People in recovery are often advised to change their network of friends so they are not socializing regularly with the same people with whom they engaged in their addiction, but today’s passage speaks to all of us. Our family and friends are very influential in our lives, and that can be wonderful and rewarding. But we are to beware of those negative influences around us, too.

Prayer: Amazing God, help us to be mindful of your will for us at all times. Amen.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 12:15

January 12, 2014

Proverbs 12:15Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to advice.

Throughout the Bible, God and Jesus choose unlikely people to accomplish extraordinary things. We should respect others enough to actively listen to them since everyone has wisdom to share.

Prayer: Understanding God, help us to listen more closely to one another. Amen.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 11:10-11

January 11, 2014

Proverbs 11:10-11When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; and when the wicked perish, there is jubilation. By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

There are many difficult sayings in Proverbs, and today’s passage is no exception. But what is clear to me is that we are called to live in community with one another, and we are to understand that our success is tied to our ability to work together with one another in ways that build us up.

Prayer: Loving God, help us to live cooperatively with one another in ways that build up your kingdom. Amen.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 10:12

January 10, 2014

Proverbs 10:12Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.

I thought of this quote that hangs on a wall at my church:
Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Loving Your Enemies,” in Strength to Love

Prayer: God of peace, you challenge us to live with a radical love for one another. Help us to treat all your children as our own relatives. Amen.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 9:9

January 9, 2014

Proverbs 9:9Give instruction to the wise, and they will become wiser still; teach the righteous and they will gain in learning.

Because I have worked at the Church Health Center for over two decades, I have been in the position of saying, “But we have always done it this way!” One constant in this world is change, and we must prepare ourselves for change by being vigilant students of life.

Prayer: Gentle God, help us to be lifelong seekers of knowledge…of you, of life and of ourselves. Amen.

A Journey through Proverbs – Proverbs 8:22-23

January 8, 2014

Proverbs 8:22-23The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth.

Throughout Proverbs wisdom is personified, and this chapter actually provides a speech being delivered by Wisdom. I couldn’t help but notice the parallel between this passage and the first verses of the Gospel of John (John 1:1-3).

Prayer: Almighty God, help us to remember that you have always been and forever shall be with us. Amen.
