Proper 16 (21) 2016 – Isaiah 58:9b-10

Monday, August 15, 2016

We are challenged to consider God’s steadfast presence in our lives and our presence in the lives of one another in the lectionary selections for this week.  Those passages include: Jeremiah 1:4-10 and Psalm 71:1-6, Isaiah 58:9b-14 and Psalm 103:1-8, Hebrews 12:18-29, and Luke 13:10-17.

Isaiah 58:9b-10If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday.

I have always appreciated the analogy of us as light of God’s love.  It implies we are beacons and that we watch out for one another.

Gracious God, help us to spread your light to those around us today and every day.  Amen.
