In the lectionary for this fourth Sunday of Easter, we meet Dorcas in our selection from Acts. Jews in Jerusalem ask Jesus straight out, “Are you the Messiah?” in our reading from John. Our scripture selections include: Acts 9:36-43, Psalm 23, Revelation 7:9-17, and John 10:22-30.
Acts 9:36 – Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity.
As you will read in a few verses, Tabitha made clothes for widows in Joppa. Widows, especially those who also lost their sons (or didn’t have any), had few rights at this time. This caused many widows to end up destitute.
Almighty God, open our eyes to all of the poverty around us. Grant us the wisdom to help people as we are able. Amen.
