1 Samuel 1:11Hannah made this vow: “O LORD of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a Nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.”

Numbers 6:1-21 details the rules of becoming a Nazirite.  It was generally a voluntary vow that a man or woman would voluntarily make that indicated the person was consecrated to the service of God.  Hannah’s vow is one of two times a mother made the vow on behalf of an unborn son.  In Hannah’s case, her son would be named Samuel.

Creator God, give us the courage to live our lives devoted to you.  Amen.
