Proper 28/Ordinary 33 2015 – 1 Samuel 1:4-5

Monday, November 9, 2015

We consider promises and covenants this week in our lectionary selections which include: 1 Samuel 1:4-20 and 1 Samuel 2:1-10, Daniel 12:1-3 and Psalm 16, Hebrews 10:11-14, (15-18), 19-25, and Mark 13:1-8.

1 Samuel 1:4-5On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb.

Given the importance of having children for your husband in ancient times, this is a touching passage with which to begin our week.  Elkanah shows both his love for Hannah and his steadfast faith in God through this seemingly simple act.

Loving God, help us to deepen our faith in you so that we can become more reliant on you.  Amen.
