Proper 27/Ordinary 32 2015 – Ruth 3:1-2

Monday, November 2, 2015

Naomi finds a husband for Ruth, and Jesus asks us to consider the gift of the widow’s mite in the passages for this week.  Our lectionary selections include: Ruth 3:1-5; 4:13-17 and Psalm 127, 1 Kings 17:8-16 and Psalm 146, Hebrews 9:24-28, and Mark 12:38-44.

Ruth 3:1-2Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, I need to seek some security for you, so that it may be well with you.  Now here is our kinsman Boaz, with whose young women you have been working. See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor.

Widows didn’t fare well in ancient times, and security for Ruth was for her to have a husband.  Her mother-in-law knew this and encouraged her to find that security in her kinsman Boaz.  Today, consider how we offer protection, in all its forms, to one another.

Almighty God, help us to give our brothers and sisters we see today a sense of peace and security.  Amen.
