Proper 19/Ordinary 24 2015 – Isaiah 50:4

Tuesday, September 8, 2015

The words we use can be healing or hurtful, and our lectionary selections will give us the opportunity to think about our words throughout this week.  The scriptures include: Proverbs 1:20-33 and Psalm 19 or Wisdom of Solomon 7:26 – 8:1, Isaiah 50:4-9a and Psalm 116:1-9, James 3:1-12, and Mark 8:27-38.

Isaiah 50:4The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens– wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught.

Most of us don’t think of ourselves as prophets, but Isaiah speaks to a truth for all us.  Someone depends on or looks up to each of us.  Offer a prayer on behalf of that person today.

Creator God, help us to be sustaining presences in the lives of our friends and families.  Amen.
