Palm Sunday 2015 – Mark 11:7-9

Mark 11:7-9Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it.  Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields.  Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

Looking at this passage through 21st Century eyes, it is easy to see the hypocrisy in the people of Jerusalem who will later in the week shout, “Crucify him!”  Yet, I worry we are not that much different from them today.  Neighbors can quickly become our enemies, and strangers are rarely welcomed into our midst.

God of all of us, help us to see people with our hearts filled with passion and our eyes brimming with compassion.  Amen.
