2 Kings 2:9-10When they had crossed the Jordan, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.”  He responded, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not.”

Then came the chariot of fire whisking Elijah into heaven while Elisha watched.  We are often asked to be reasonable, to think practically.  But we are reminded by this passage that God’s power is not contained by the limits of our imagination.  Don’t be afraid to ask for what seems to be impossible.

God of wonder, God of light, help us to embrace the breadth of your heart and the depth of your love for us.  Amen.
