Second Sunday of Epiphany, 2015 – John 3:1,10

Monday, January 12, 2015

God speaks to a young Samuel, Jesus asks Philip to be a disciple and Paul speaks to the Corinthians about the body being a temple of the Lord in this week’s lectionary selections: 1 Samuel 3:1-10, (11-20), Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18, 1 Corinthians 6:12-20, and John 1:43-51.

John 3:1,10Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.  Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

In the eight verses that separate the verses for today, God speaks to Samuel three times before Eli is able to help Samuel understand that it is God calling him.  Fortunately for Samuel, God is patient and understanding.

Gracious God, help us to recognize when it is your voice calling us in the night.  Amen.
