Second Sunday of Advent, 2014 – Isaiah 40:3-4

Monday, December 1, 2014

As our week together begins, we are approaching the second Sunday of the Advent season.  The familiar passages that will light our way this week include: Isaiah 40:1-11; Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13; 2 Peter 3:8-15a and Mark 1:1-8.

Isaiah 40:3-4A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.  Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.

There has been much in the media recently about the unequal treatment certain members of American society continue to receive.  What struck me about the passage this morning is that it seems to telling us that to make a place for God to come we must first level the playing field for all.

God of us all, give us the courage to bear one another’s burdens and to live as brothers and sisters.  Amen.
