Proper 10/Ordinary 15, 2014 – Genesis 25:20-21, 26b

Monday, July 7, 2014

I hope you had a restful Fourth of July weekend. Our scriptures for this coming Sunday remind us of the importance of prayer in our lives. The selections include: Genesis 25:19-34 and Psalm 119:105-112, Isaiah 55:10-13 and Psalm 65:(1-8), 9-13, Romans 8:1-11 and Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23.

Genesis 25:20-21, 26bIsaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, sister of Laban the Aramean. Isaac prayed to the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD granted his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived…Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them (Esau and Jacob).

We are not told at what point Isaac prayed to God, but he married Rebekah at 40, and he became a father at 60. That said, I think it goes without saying that Isaac showed great patience in waiting for God’s answer to his prayer.

Almighty God, help us to be more patient as we await your answers to our own prayers. Amen.
