Devotion for Pentecost Sunday 2014 – 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Monday, June 2, 2014

This Sunday is Pentecost which is often considered the birthday of the Christian church. This week the lectionary scriptures are some of my favorites. Those scriptures include: Acts 2:1-21; Psalm 104 24-34, 35b; 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 and John 20:19-23. Alternate passages include Numbers 11:24-30 and John 7:37-39.

1 Corinthians 12:4-7Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given a manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

One of Apostle Paul’s chief gifts to us was his concept of the “body of Christ,” which he discusses in this passage. Each of us has God-given gifts with which we can help bring healing to one another. Consider today your gifts and how you are using those gifts.

Gracious God, help us to know our special gifts, and help us use them to better your kingdom here on earth. Amen.
