Fifth Sunday of Lent, 2014 – John 11:32-33

John 11:32-33When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved.

Complicated emotions are packed into these two verses. Was Mary indicting Jesus or was she speaking more out of resignation? What tone of voice did Mary use? Then it struck me. Mary had first knelt before Jesus…a poignant act of faith in Jesus and God.

Merciful God, help us to feel your presence especially in our times of doubt. Amen.
