Daily Devotion from the Church Health Center – Psalm 14:4-5

Monday, September 09, 2013 – Proper 19/Ordinary 24, Year C

The lectionary selections this week include Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28; Psalm 14; 1 Timothy 1:12-17 and Luke 15:1-10. Alternate readings include Exodus 32:7-14 and Psalm 51:1-10.

Psalm 14:4-5 – Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon the LORD? There they shall be in great terror, for God is with the company of the righteous. You would confound the plans of the poor, but the LORD is their refuge.

I have been thinking about powerlessness a lot lately, particularly as it relates to the process of recovery, the topic of our clergy conference on addiction next week. This passage reminds us that despite the powers over us, God is always ready to provide us shelter.

Prayer: Loving God, at those times in our lives when you seem distant from us, help us find your steadfast beacon that can lead us back to you. Amen.
