Daily Devotion from the Church Health Center – Hebrews 12:1

Thursday, August 15, 2013 – Proper 15/Ordinary 20, Year C

Hebrews 12:1Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us…

The writer of Hebrews, traditionally thought to be James, mentions the faith of Abraham, Moses and others through history in the verses prior to this verse. Consider today the witnesses who surround us and strengthen our faith.

Prayer: Loving God, thank you for the people around us whose faith is strong and whose lives give hope to us. Amen.

This is one of my favorite passages, Butch. It reminds me that I am responsible to those special people in my life who loved & cared for me and who have passed on.

Great to hear from you, Naomi. What a surprise. I love this passage too. I also like the references to our faith life as a race. It suggests that it can be tough at times…and that it takes practice.
