Monday, May 13, 2013 – Pentecost Sunday, Year C
Christ has ascended into heaven, and we are now approaching Pentecost. The lectionary selections for this Sunday include: Acts 2:1-21; Psalm 104:24-34, 35b; Romans 8:14-17 and John 14:8-17, (25-27). An alternative passage is Genesis 11:1-9.
Genesis 11:1-2, 4 – Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there…Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”
Sharing a common language does not guarantee universal understanding. Language is so nuanced that a word can take on different meanings depending on the inflection in one’s voice or the body language used in its delivery. Engage in active listening today so that you can best understand what is being said.
Prayer: Almighty God, help us to be better listeners today. Help us to understand what is actually being said. Amen.
