Daily Devotion from the Church Health Center – John 21:18-19

Friday, April 12, 2013 – Third Sunday of Easter, Year C

John 21:18-19 – [Jesus has appeared to the disciples for a third time since his resurrection. He has instructed Peter to Feed my lambs…Tend my sheep…Feed my sheep.] Jesus says: Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you don’t want to go. (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.”

Once again in the readings this week, we see the high cost of discipleship for the earliest Christians. Giving up your life to follow Christ clearly had literal as well as metaphorical meaning.

Prayer: Loving God, give us the strength to follow wherever you lead us. Amen.
