Daily Devotion from the Church Health Center – Matthew 2:9-12

Friday, January 4, 2013 – Epiphany Sunday, Year C

Matthew 2:9-12When the wise men had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

According to the Encarta Dictionary, an epiphany is “a sudden intuitive leap of understanding, especially through an ordinary but striking occurrence.” When the wise men saw the baby Jesus, they saw the face of God, the hope of the world…and “they were overwhelmed with joy.”

Prayer: Loving God, may we see you in the person next to us and begin to know the joy felt by the wise men. Amen.
