Daily Devotion from the Church Health Center – Revelation 21:1-2

Monday, October 29, 2012 – Proper 26/Ordinary 31, Year B

There are two sets of scriptures I am looking at for this week.  The lectionary selections for Sunday include: Ruth 1:1-18; Psalm 146; Hebrews 9:11-14 and Mark 12:28-34.  Alternate passages include Deuteronomy 6:1-9 and Psalm 119:1-8.  Thursday is All Saints Day and those scriptures include: Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-9 or Isaiah 25:6-9; Psalm 24; Revelation 21:1-6a and John 11:32-44.

Revelation 21:1-2Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.  And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

I first read this passage 30 years ago, and it has been a personal favorite ever since.  I feel that part of our responsibility as people of faith is to help usher in this new Jerusalem by caring or one another in radical ways.

Prayer: Gracious God, help us help one another in ways that bring glory to you.  Amen.
