Daily Devotion from the Church Health Center – Job 23:1-3, 7

Monday, October 8, 2012 – Proper 23/Ordinary 28

The lectionary selections for this week include: Job 23:1-9, 16-17; Psalm 22:1-15; Hebrews 4:12-16 and Mark 10:17-31.  Alternate scriptures include: Amos 5:6-7, 10-15 and Psalm 90:12-17.

Job 23:1-3, 7Then Job answered: “Today also my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning.  Oh that I knew where I might find him, that I might come into his dwelling!  There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted forever by my judge.

In Job 22, a “friend” named Eliphaz blames Job’s “wickedness” for the situation he is in.  He admonishes him to get right with God, yet we know that Satan is behind all of Job’s problems.  Job laments that if only he could talk to God, God would find him innocent.  We are reminded that our words to people in their times of distress are important, and we must take care not to say things that might cause someone to question their faith.

Prayer: Loving God of all, help us to be positive witnesses to your steadfast love for all of your children.  Amen.
