Daily Devotion from the Church Health Center – Genesis 37:22-24

Wednesday, August 3, 2011 – Proper 14 & Ordinary 19, Year A

Genesis 37:22-24Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw Joseph into this pit here in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might rescue him and out of their hand and restore him to his father. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the long robe with the sleeves that he wore; and they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.

The robe was so much a part of Joseph’s self image that he wore it in front of his brothers despite knowing their feelings about it. I wonder how many people coming before us today will, in some way, feel stripped or robbed of that very thing which gives, or gave, meaning to their life. Since it is rarely as obvious as a coat of many colors, remember to treat those who come before you with gentleness.

Prayer: Merciful God, people will come before us today with hidden stories of pain and suffering. Give us gentle spirits so that we might be a source of comfort for all. AMEN.
