Daily Devotion from the Church Health Center – John 20:24-25

Thursday, April 28, 2011 – Easter 2, Year A

John 20:24-25But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”

How do we know someone is getting healthier? Their blood pressure drops to normal levels. Their hemoglobin A1c is stable between 4 and 6. They have lost 10% of their body weight. Not unlike “Doubting Thomas” our visible proof of health often takes the form of quantifiable test results. BUT by taking the spiritual dimension of people’s lives seriously, we also look to other signs of health – a smile on a face that once showed sadness, patience rather than frustration shown to a child during homework time, or forgiveness offered to someone toward whom bitterness once ruled.

Prayer: Wonderful God, be with us in our daily efforts to make people healthier in both body and spirit. AMEN.
