Thought & Prayer for Proper 19 & Ordinary 24, 2010 – Exodus 32:7-8

Exodus 32:7-8The LORD said to Moses, “Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; They have cast for themselves an image of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’”

I don’t think of us as patient people in general. To varying degrees, we want life to go our way when we want it…but God’s time may not be our time.

Prayer: Gracious God, grant each of us more patience so that we might see your plan unfold before us. AMEN.

Thought & Prayer for Proper 19 & Ordinary 24, 2010 – Psalm 14:4-5

The lectionary selections this Labor Day week include Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28; Psalm 14; 1 Timothy 1:12-17 and Luke 15:1-10. Alternate readings include Exodus 32:7-14 and Psalm 51:1-10.

Psalm 14:4-5Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon the LORD? There they shall be in great terror, for God is with the company of the righteous. You would confound the plans of the poor, but the LORD is their refuge.

I have been thinking about powerlessness a lot lately, particularly as it relates to the process of recovery, the topic of our clergy conference in October. This passage reminds us that despite the powers over us, God is always ready to provide us shelter.

Prayer: Loving God, at those times in our lives when you seem distant from us, help us find your steadfast beacon that can lead us back to you. AMEN.

I looked to the earth, and lo, it was waste and void…
