An article on a pioneer HIV/AIDS clinic

I started working in an immunology lab in the early 1980’s at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. I can remember very intelligent scientists predicting the development of AIDS sanitariums where victims of this awful disease would be quarantined from the rest of society. More than two decades later in my own church, I can see how the miracle of modern drugs and a loving and accepting church environment can bring people living with HIV/AIDS back to a state of health never imagined all those years ago.

I think as it did for me, this article on the Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, DC will remind you of how far we have come.

Luke 1:47-49

We read what is often called Mary’s Song from Luke 1:47-49 – My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.  Surely from now on all generations will call me blessed.

When I read this passage during Advent each year, I picture a young woman in a long white gown, dancing and spinning and singing these words while beating a tambourine.  But Mary was a virgin from a modest if not poor background, so musical instruments, dancing lessons and gowns were unlikely.  God can work through anyone…even each of us.

Prayer:

Gracious God, you take us as we are and do amazing things.  Continue to work through each of us, we pray.  AMEN.
